Speaking to ButtonBandits.com, Chief Game Designer Ralph Fulton has said that he believes forthcoming title GRID is the most exciting racing game ever made and that competing titles such as Forza and Gran Turismo are all about the car list rather than racing.
When asked if he was pleased development was now over and how he thought the final product had shaped up Ralph said “we have been desperate to get everything into it we wanted to get into it and I think we’re all really pleased now the dust has settled on it with the product we’ve got. I think it’s a really exciting racing game, I’d go as far to say it’s the most exciting racing game ever made, it looks stunning and I think were all going to take a well deserved rest after this.”.
On comments in forums and online on the number of cars in the game compared to competing titles such as Gran Tourismo and Forza, Ralph said “Yeah I can understand that. When you have competing games like Gran Turismo and Forza, which pride themselves on the car list, there all about the car list, that’s their focus. I know Turn 10 have been quite open about the fact that Forza is just really a car list. Which is great for them. Does it make sense for Codemasters to try and do the same? Probably not, I think from a number of perspectives. Not least of which is that their doing that already. I think you can put a different slant on a racing game and I think we have done that by making it about racing.

Gran Turismo all about the car list? so i guess that’s why nissan’s paying them to help develop their cars or why Mitsubishi uses the Gran Turismo engine to test their cars, or why BMW wants the game featured in their commercials… Yeah, must be because they have a lot of cars; that makes sense…
Same goes for Forza; but that’s about the ricers not the racers.
Just because codemaster’s can barely put out 40 cars, they have to codemn other games for having “too many”? I don’t get the logic in that.
The demo of this game sucked.
reminds me of the great Steven Segal story; he steps out of his movie trailer and says:
“I just read the greatest script ever written”
- oh yeah? who wrote it?

Nissan asked Gran Turismo help with the latest car, the GT-R? Now that made me laugh! Yes, they asked help for all the menus from the car’s in-system software but when it came to the actual dynmaics (chassis, handling, gear ratios, etc.), it was all Nissan.
And Mitsubishi tests their cars in reality, no the flawed Gran Turismo game engine.
The Real Driving Simulator Gran Turismo is not (try out GTR2 for the PC and before responding to this, if you do) and then you’ll see what real simulations are like.
Anyways, to come back to the point at hand, yes, I do think (and I do enjoy my Gran Turismos) that GT is all about cars and no fun. Personally, I only end up driving the same 20 or 30 cars (I don’t like the PT Cruiser or the VW Beetle).
What’s more important, the amount of cars and sparse, boring tracks (without any of the passion or edginess of the real tracks) or fun, intense, combative AI with nail-biting driving? I’ll take the latter thank you
