National newspaper praises games!

Published by GiantHaystax at 6:04 pm under News

buzz.jpgYes you did read the headline right! The Guardian has an article today by Naomi Alderman headlined “If we deny children access to all computer games, we deprive them of a rich and magical experience”. Amazingly the author understands games and ridicules recent comments in other papers by saying “wanting to devote this amount of attention to a computer game probably demonstrates that I’m “addicted”. Unlike, say, if I were reading a novel: then my irritation at being interrupted would just show that I was “engrossed”.  Talking about the Grand Theft Auto series Naomi says “Clearly, these themes are not suitable for young children. But just as a responsible parent wouldn’t hand their child a copy of American Psycho or sit them down in front of Marathon Man without any further discussion or comment, games can and should be part of the ongoing conversation between parents and children about the world.”

A mainstream media article praising games? quite a turn up for the books I’m sure you will agree! The author actually has knowledge of the subject being discussed and doesn’t resort to hysteria. With such strange goings on who knows what will happen next, maybe a release date for Duke Nukem Forever!
