Goldeneye on 360 cancelled…

Published by TheHairyMartian at 1:45 am under News, Xbox 360

We were expecting you, Mr Bond… Every Nintendo 64 owner remembers Goldeneye, the classic FPS that revolutionised split screen multiplayer gaming. So when news emerged of Rare’s re-development of the game for XBox Live Arcade, it brought back misty-eyed memories of 1997, with four friends crowded around the same screen, shooting lumps out of each other.

Alas, these hopes were dashed  as soon as they were built up….

The April 2008 issue of Xbox World 360 contains exclusive details of Rare’s plans, including screenshots of a more next-gen Goldeneye complete with new skyboxes, textures and character models. Also, the alreadly iconic multiplayer mode would of course be shared over XBox Live, but with the option to play 4 players online using the original split screen!

As the development reached close to completion, Nintendo’s Japanese president Saturo Iwata (understandably) would not condone the flagship N64 title to appear on another platform, and despite Nintendo not owning rights to the code or to block the release, the article speculates that Activision (007 licence holders) didn’t want to threaten their relationship with Nintendo.

The current issue of XBox World 360 is available until the 25th of March, and contains the full details and screenshots. You can show support to Rare by emailing them at editor@rareware.com, or alternatively go to www.nintendo.com/consumer/webform.jsp and send them a friendly message, as a  Goldeneye player stating his/her approval of a re-release…
